vs. The Bourne - August 30

The Bourne and Headley started their game on Saturday in 3rd and 4th place respectively of division 2 of the I‘anson cup, so whoever won would have a big advantage for the remaining 3 weeks of the season. At halfway, with the Bourne having totalled 215 for 6 off 48 overs, they looked to have the upper hand, but Headley’s batting line-up had different ideas as they knocked off the total with 19 balls to spare with 7 wickets in hand. Headley skipper Ciaran Rooney played a magnificent knock of 82 to break the back of the total and he was ably supported by Shane Armstrong in a 2nd wicket stand of 147. Armstrong, in his first knock for Headley for 3 months was in tremendous touch as he made a fine 74. The Bourne were simply unable to exert any real pressure, as 2 maidens in the innings would testify and although both men gave chances, they weren’t until the game was nearly won.

The Bourne’s batting effort was based around a good knock of 94 by opener Nick Hales, who survived fine opening spells by Clive Bate and Ashley Canning and was then able to push on during the latter part of the innings. However, he didn’t find a willing partner until Shuler’s agricultural knock of 33. Headley’s bowlers paid for not creating enough chances, despite an excellent spell of leg spin by Gavin Arend, but with small boundaries and a quick outfield, 215 looked short of a really testing total, as Rooney and Armstrong showed.
