vs. Witley - May 31 A pulsating game between 2 good teams ended with Headley taking a winning draw against top of table Witley, when all 4 results were still possible off the final ball of the game. Needing 4 to win and only 1 wicket left, Witley batsman Wilson was only able to get a single as George Ellis held his nerve for the visitors. Headley were dealt a heavy blow earlier in the afternoon when regular new ball bowler Graham Badland had pulled his hamstring while batting, but the team dug deep to gain an impressive result. Ashley Cook was again the bedrock of the batting effort, as he made an impressive 41 before being run out backing up for the second time in three games. A 57 run partnership with Gavin Arend gave Headley a good platform, but it took a classy knock of 51 not out from Ant Beddows to make sure that the good start wasn’t wasted and 170 always looked a testing total on the slow Witley wicket. Geroge Ellis struck twice with the new ball to leave Witley 21 for 2, but the young partranship of Freddie Dale and Holloway rode their luck to put on 58 before Holloway went for 33. Headley were then looking in some trouble as Keiron Ritchie took 15 off 1 over from Arend, but the leg spinner had his revenge and added another 2 quick wickets to put Headley in charge at 106 for 6. However, Witley’s lower order displayed some excellent fight and went for the victory when others would have played for the draw. Regular wickets fell and 9 was needed off the last over and a boundary off the 5th ball left Witley needing 4 to win off the last ball, but a draw was the right result in the game where both teams gave everything and nobody deserved to lose. |
