vs. Wood Street - August 23 A magnificent maiden century for Headley by George Williams was the highlight of a dominant performance against Wood Street as a victory by 132 runs was secured. The only hitch on an otherwise ideal day for Headley came when skipper Ciaran Rooney lost the toss, but having chosen to bowl first, Wood Street did not make best use of the new ball as Williams eased to rapid 50 with classy shots all round the ground. Both Williams and partner Rooney gave chances, but Wood Street’s inability to take them was heavily punished as they put on match winning stand of 179. Grey was steady for Wood Street, but nobody else was able to exert any pressure and Williams soon brought up his maiden century for Headley and went on to make 122 as Headley were able to declare on a mammoth 262 for 7. Wood Street were only looking to play for a draw, but they soon lost the experienced John Morrison to Will Marks. In partnership with Clive Bate, Marks soon had the Wood Street line-up tottering as they reduced their hosts to 47 for 6. The lower order then dug in and a draw looked a possibility, but Wood Street skipper Azeem looked to play one shot too many and was dismissed with 5 overs to go and then Bate took the last wicket with 10 balls to spare to secure a comprehensive victory. |
